Have you ever wondered how important hope is for your life? The Bible places hope alongside faith and love in the first book written to the Corinthian church. It states, “Now remains faith, hope and love. The greatest of these is love.” It is easy to see how important having faith and love is for your life, but what makes hope so important?
– to cherish desire with anticipation; to desire with expectation of obtainment; to expect with confidence.
First hope creates anticipation of the future. When we are hopeful we take risks and seize opportunities that present themselves. We wake up each day thinking, “What good things are going to happen today? What opportunities will I have today?” Living with hope creates joy and gives energy because you know that you are living a fuller life. If hope for the future is missing than we don’t take risks and tend to live in fear of making a mistake.
Secondly, hope gives confidence to pursue and live your dreams. I’m amazed at the opportunities I’ve had that God has opened because I trusted that He was leading me and took action to live His purpose for my life. These opportunities started with pursuing Life Coach training, to coaching a client base that stretches across the globe. Because of hope I took action and have been rewarded for it.
Finally, hope includes expectation. This expectation is that “all things are working together for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Because I have discovered and am living God’s purpose for my life I can expect to receive all of His help in living it out.
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may
overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” — Romans 15:13
Just like choosing to love and choosing to have faith, we must choose to have hope.
Point to Ponder: Consider monitoring your self talk and look for how fear of the future is showing up in your life. What is this fear focused on? What is it based on? Once you have identified these negative thoughts write down what they are and then begin to develop a ‘truth syrum’. For each fear ask yourself, What is the truth? And begin to speak this truth to yourself whenever your fear arises.
